She was one of many Trump advisers who announced their resignation on January 6, 2021, the day of the Capitol riot.

She expressed at the moment in a public statement her "very troubled" feelings regarding the attack.

Matthews stated he was proud of the policies we implemented and that it was an honour to serve in the Trump administration.

Matthews previously had a voluntary appearance in front of the House Select Committee in February.
