Iraq shrine collapse: Al Sadr urges government to investigate Karbala landslide

The General Civil Defence Directorate reported that among those deceased in the landslide that slammed the Qattarat al-Imam Ali on Saturday were four women and a toddler.

On Monday, rescuers in Iraq kept searching the debris for survivors.

Two minarets flank the shrine, which is situated at the base of tall, naked rock walls.

Its concrete roof has been partially ruined.

According to Iraq's Civil Defense, the humidity that drenched an earthen embankment close to the shrine is what triggered the landside.

Tens of thousands of people support Mr. Al Sadr, a Shiite cleric who wants to stop US and Iranian meddling in Iraq's domestic affairs.

In the parliamentary elections held in October, his party bloc garnered the most seats.

However, a protracted impasse has stopped the nation from electing a new administration.

By Monday morning, three children had been rescued and sent to the hospital, while the bodies of a toddler, four women, and two adults had been found at the scene.
